Christina Norton

30 October 2014

Christina is an architect with over 25 years’ experience. Over the past 15 years she has led large scale, strategic urban projects, heading up multi-disciplinary teams, mostly in the London area. She is a pioneer of narrative design and in setting up Fluid in 1996, established one of the first participatory urban design & co-production agencies in the UK. This was followed by the establishment of Soundings in 2007 to offer stand alone and meaningful, bespoke consultation and engagement.

Christina is one of the most experienced strategy designers, place identity makers and culturalists working across London producing socially driven projects, working with local communities and stakeholders to deliver exciting, sustainable and robust plans. In London alone she has completed the 6km High Street 2012 project; the environmental improvements co-designed with the local community to rejuvenate the Westway Trust land (receivers of ensuing Good Growth funding); Culture Mile Look & Feel Strategy for the Public Realm for the City of London; Town Centre Frameworks for Wood Green and Golders Green and the Royal Docks Cultural Placemaking Strategy for the GLA/Royal Docks Enterprise Zone.

She is currently leading a team to deliver a bold vision for the first of a number of Green Routes for Mayfair initiated by the Mayfair Neighbourhood Forum;

the route will link Hyde Park with Regent Street, provide a new green corridor, connecting green spaces and people to nature, improving biodiversity, helping improve air quality and supporting the mitigation of climate change and water management.
Christina brings knowledge, skill, design flair along with extensive and innovative approaches to engagement and consultation to all the projects she works on. She leads teams to ensure community and stakeholder support and delivery of successful projects that meet client (public and private sector) ambitions.Christina has taught extensively (at the Architectural Association and London Metropolitan University) and her work has been published, reviewed and exhibited widely, including at the V&A. She was a founder member of the radical group NATO, which in the 1980’s published a manifesto for dynamic and experiential city design, that placed architecture as a backdrop to the life of a place and the people who use it. The work of the group remains influential to this day.

Christina has through being an external examiner for a number of architectural courses, through public speaking and as a director of Fluid/Soundings advocated for equality and diversity in both the profession, appropriate role models in academia and inclusivity in public consultation and engagement.
